Week Three
This
week is optional, however the itinerary given assumes a typical beach
safari with accommodation in a three star hotel in Malindi with some
(optional) excursions. E.g.
Day 15. Arrive in the morning by train. Hereafter you will be
transferred to Malindi to the 3-Star Mombasa Beach or Reef Hotel on half
board base . Several activities
can be undertaken such as, water-skiing, scuba diving, snorkelling and
banana-rides.
Day 16-20. Full relaxation with all the comfort you can imagine.
Here are some of the optional things you could do:
The main activity during this
week will be simply relaxation. Having had a long two weeks, we hope
that you will have a chance to bask and enjoy the beauty of the Kenyan
coast and it’s peoples.
The
itinerary will be relaxing too. We have arranged it to be in an open way
so that you can choose between sometime visiting the coastal
attractions, enjoying the cultural cuisines, water sports or just lazing
on the white beaches of this paradise land.

Short excursions
Fort Jesus (2 hours)

Fort Jesus is Mombasa’s most
popular tourist attraction. The fort, located along the coastline near
the old town, is a monumental p9iece of architecture that was built in
the 16th century by the Portuguese. The fort has a museum
that displays various artefacts from the era where Mombassa served as a
transit point for the slave trade and commodities which enjoyed regular
visits by seafarers and the like. It’s interior comprises of torture
rooms and prison cells where slaves were kept in captivity before being
traded. Weapons such as canons, which were used to defend the fort from
invading foreigners as well as rioting locals, can be seen both inside
and outside the fort. The fort opens its gates for viewing in the
morning and closes at dusk.
Gedi
Ruins (3 Hours)

On the
North coast of Mombassa, towards the town of Malindi, lays one of the
most prehistoric ruins found in Mombassa, the Gedi Ruins. Gedi was a
small town build entirely on rock and stones, which was inhabited by a
few thousand Swahili people and ruled by a very rich sultan. These ruins
date back from the 15th Century and through careful
preservation most of the original foundations can still be seen today. A
well-informed and educated guide gives a tour of the ruins. They are
designated over as a national museum by law, and its preservation is a
direct reflection of the government’s commitment to uphold the countries
cultural and historical background.
Bamburi
Nature Trail (3 Hours)

The Bamburi nature trail is
the largest animal sanctuary in Mombassa. Located in Bamburi next to the
cement factory, the trail holds an enormous variety of animals,
reptiles, insects and botanical gardens. Walking along the trail is an
ideal way to look at the various animals, and on many occasions holding
or feeding a reptile such as a snake is allowed under close supervision
of a guide. Educational videos are also shown, with emphasis on the
history and continuous improvement of the trail it was previously a
barren piece of land that had been stripped of its resources through
limestone mining, and was redeveloped through reforestation and
conservation efforts. Today it is a habitat for a large number of flora
and fauna species.
Mamba
Village (4 Hours)

Situated in Nyali, this is
East Africa’s largest crocodile farm. A tour of the farm starts with a
movie on the life cycle and behaviour of crocodiles, followed by a
comprehensive tour of the rest of the farm. It ends with the highlight
of the day; a scene of blood as the crocodiles fight for the meal of the
day during their feeding time. Excellent cuisine is available at the
Mamba restaurant, and the house specialty; grilled crocodile meat.
Souvenirs of your visit can be bought at the Mamba souvenir shop located
within the village.
The
Tamarind Evening Dhow (4 Hours)

You shall be picked from your
hotel for an evening cruise aboard a traditional dhow and enjoy the
perfect combination of good food, music and romantic atmosphere on this
leisurely cruise in Mombassa old harbour. Highlights include a sumptuous
meal, dancing under the stars and a gentle sail past the peaceful creeks
of Mombassa Island.

Wasini Island & Kisite Sea

Welcome to a day of fulltime
pleasure in the richest marine park in the Kenyan coast/ depart early
morning for the tranquil fishing lode of Shimoni, close to the Tanzanian
boarder. The scenic route takes you through lush coconut and cashew nut
plantations and the colourful villages of the Digo people.
At Shimoni jet board in the
authentic motorised Lamu dhow, which cruise and sail you through an
enchanting seascape of Islands to the underwater splendours of the
Kisite Marine park. Here snorkellers marvel at the incredible variety of
marine life in the shallow and warm waters around Kisite Island, the
venue of numerous birds.
We escort scuba divers to
explore a number of excellent dive sites, also teeming with astounding
variety of Marine life, which inhabit the magnificent coral reefs in and
around the park.
A sumptuous Swahili style
seafood lunch is served at Wasini Island restaurant. There after visit
the traditional Muslim village before returning to your hotel late in
the afternoon.
Shimba Hills National
Reserve (1 Day)

For a contrasting excursion
fro the coast, Shimba hills national reserve is an easy drive and offers
beautiful, lush scenery. It has a unique and botanically rich coastal
rainforest. Two of Kenya’s most beautiful orchids can be found here.
Another rare species, unique to the reserve is the Sable antelope with
its handsome near-black coat. Buffaloes, elephants, giraffes lions,
leopards and several primates are found here. The best places to see
wildlife are on the flat grasslands near the spectacular Sheldrick’s
falls and the Lango plains near Giriama point from where you can look
out to the Indian Ocean. There are a number of walking trails if the
elephant lookout and Pengo fill and falls.
Tsavo
East (Full day)

Our
safari leaves in the early morning from hotel and drives north 100km
towards the main Mombassa-Nairobi highway to Bachuma gate. The entrance
to vast wilderness of Tsavo east, Kenya’s oldest and largest park, which
is where the infamous “Man Eaters of Tsavo” haunted the construction of
the Mombassa – Uganda railway by terrorizing railway workers.
The
park covers an area of 11,000 square kilometres. There herds of
elephant, buffalo and zebra as well as giraffe, ostrich, gazelle and
antelope. The safari visits Aruba dam, a favourite wildlife watering
hole. We stop for lunch at Voi safari lodge or Ndololo safari camp.
After launch in the afternoon we take you on another game drive.
Afterwards we drive you to the coast arriving at your hotel in the early
evening in Mombassa.
Day 21. Departure to Nairobi by comfortable private bus. So to be
able to see the beauty of the Tsavo-area that we will pass on the way.
