Foundation
Question
Who founded it?
Answer
A Dutch investor, Mr. Gerard Besseling, began the foundation on realizing that the tourism industry in the country earns the highest foreign exchange in the country and the communities that are directly involved in the industry do not gain from it. The money goes into the accounts and pockets of people in the big cities and this he though as exploitation. He therefore began the foundation with the aim of ‘empowering the Kenyan child through its education’. This however calls for various players in the industry, both local and international, to give a helping hand and achieve this goals.

Question
What is Meet de Kenyans?
Answer
In order to achieve its set goal, Amicare Foundation in conjunction with Amicabre Travel has begun a new and uniquely exciting programme dubbed Meet The Kenyans. This is a revolutionary travel and aid programme that fully benefits both the communities and participants. The experience takes place in two weeks with an optional third week. The first week is full of travel and adventure as you visit various tour attractions and facilities while learning more about the cultures and peoples you will encounter. The second week is the aid week. Here you will busy yourselves working on the identified school. We will renovate facilities in the school; build furniture, classes, sanitary units and other necessary activities in bettering the study conditions for the children in this school. During this week participants live with the local communities and are able to share experiences for the different countries and lifestyles that they live in. Week three will involve another time of safari as you relax after the busy week on the white beaches of the Kenyan coast. This will enable you appreciate the age long traditions of the coastal tribes and the warm sun of this tropical stretch. The week will be spent at leisure before leaving the country with memories to last a lifetime.

Question
I need to know about the cultures that we will be interacting with
Answer
Well, Kenya has more than 40 different tribal groups spread all over the country. As we will only be visiting the south and western parts of Kenya, the number of tribes and cultures that we will interact with are less.
In the south we will meet the Maasai tribes and as we enter the central parts of the Great Rift Valley we shall come in contact with the largest community, the Kikuyu tribe. Moving towards the West we shall pass through Kalenjin lands famous for their tea growing estates before getting to the Lakeside tribe of the Luo. Our final encounter, and longest, will be with the Luhya community. Here we shall live with them through the whole of the project week.
(This is a link to the individual mentioned tribes on the above FAQ and also could be used on the itinerary page http://www.kenyacolors.com/tribes.htm it also has many other Kenyan tribes for those interested. I hope it answers the question on cultures and traditions of these tribes. It also has information on all the parks in the country. I think that it’s a fantastic information site)

Question
Where will I sleep during the project week?
Answer
During the project week participants will sleep and stay with host families from the local community. We shall have already identified and prepared the host families before your coming. Accommodation facilities should hence be expected to be simple and basic as per the family that you will be staying with.
The meals will also be with the family during the evenings and mornings. During the day we shall have a project kitchen, which will cater for the day meals, snacks and drinks. When with the family we shall cater to ensure that you have mineral water during the stay. This does not mean that they don’t have clean water; it’s just a precaution as most travellers suffer from the difference in microbes in water from different regions than theirs.

Question
How much money goes to the community?
Answer
The main goal of the programme is not financial. ‘Meet The Kenyans’ aims to create a base for education of the rural folk. This is especially to those that are unfairly not given a share from the tourism industry. We aim to give to these communities back from the industry with your help.
When it comes to financial assistance that depends on the group of participants themselves. They could decide to continue with financing the school as time progresses or identify bright students and sponsor them through higher education.
During the programme however, money paid by the participants will be used in purchase of materials for the construction and renovation of the school. Some will also go to the host families in catering for the extra costs of having another person(s) in their home. More money for purchase of materials will however be gotten from local companies that are partnering with us on the programme, some financially and others in materials

Question
I can’t make it for the programme but want to offer help!
Answer
As much as we shall miss you personal participation on the project, we would appreciate if you could tell others about the project and hope that they join us in it. Alternatively you could directly send money to our account and we shall channel it to the currently running programme.
If not financial you could send over whatever materials you have to send for either the programme or to go directly to the student or teacher body in the school being attended to. This could be in form of clothing (both old or new), tuition fees etc. basically anything that will make the lives of this people better
