Introduction
Tourism has over the years taken to be the richest and most important
industry in Kenya. The wealth generated in the industry mainly comes from
rural areas (country side) where most attractions are. In this regard,
rural areas should profit from the industry and be capable of
establishing, maintaining and improving social structures or services.
Instead locals are exploited of their resources and left to their
troubles. One major predicament is the lack of access to education.
Furthermore, majority of families in the most popular and beautiful
tourism destinations live way below the poverty line earning less than a
dollar a day. The Kenyan Government's new education policy entitling all
primary school students to free education has resulted in an enormous
strain on the limited educational facilities as large numbers of student
have enrolled in the schools.
Amicare Foundation is a Non-Governmental Organization founded with the aim
of linking and bringing together tourism organizations and other willing
parties in promoting eco-cultural tourism while at the same time
participating in community development activities in rural areas of Kenya.
The foundation organizes for visiting tourists to set aside some of their
time and money to finance and take part in community based projects.
Amicare Foundation has the dream of integrating tourism activities in the
country with helping the local communities.
The Initiative
The Foundation is working closely with Amicabre
Travel Services and the two have initiated the program "Meet The
Kenyans".
Through "Meet the Kenyans", both aim to create a bridge linking the
tourism industry and national development. The program will involve
committed tourists with self-initiative to assist in community-based
activities. The activities include renovations of schools, hospitals,
recreational areas and other areas in the school community infrastructure
and other development projects. Additionally, the visitors are able to
directly interact with the people from the communities they are assisting.
